I am responsible for a team of 9 developers, providing application support to over 50 websites of varying technologies. As well as the training and management of these staff, I am involved in client meetings, writing of functional specifications, designing the architecture of new functionality, performing quality reviews and ensuring the smooth running of all website applications. A large proportion of our clients are Government related, and as such I hope SC security clearance.
Technical Support Consultant, Cable & Wireless / Hyperlink InteractiveOn a daily basis I am exposed to a broad spectrum of technologies: largely Java (Servlets and JSP pages - Resin, Tomcat etc), ASP, ColdFusion, VBScript, Perl, PHP, C++, HTML/XHTML, JavaScript, SQL and database design (usually with Oracle8, Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL) and other technologies. I also do some graphics work with PhotoShop and Flash animation, and we pride ourselves in making sites that meet the latest accessibility guidelines.
I am responsible for all technical aspects of several Web accounts, currently including large Government websites, such as the DCA, Coalclaims (a DTI project) and The Court Service, as well as commercial sites such as Britannia Music, Early Learning Centre, Allders, Popworld, PepsiChart and RealSlimmers. Previously I have also worked on Clifford Chance, BigBlueDog and Post Office Counters Ltd.
Most of our websites are high-volume, complex transactional or e-commerce applications, involving a large amount of custom code as well as integration with third parties, for example to Datacash for card validation, or interfaces to fulfilment houses.
I extensively use UNIX, Linux, Solaris and NT. I have gained an in depth knowledge of various client- and server-side (eg Apache) Internet technologies. I am also responsible for the statistics reports of all our web sites, I am trained to use both Webabacus and NetIQ's Webtrends software, as well as our own in-house software.
My current role is varied and highly client facing; meeting with customers, or talking with them daily, to advise or troubleshoot. I have regularly trained groups of customers on our products.
I am highly involved with programming extra functionality for existing web sites, as well as estimating, writing specifications and co-ordinating tasks between system engineers, designers and more junior programmers in the team.
Security Consultant, Logica UKI was involved with security evaluation under the UK ITSEC Scheme and the European Common Criteria Scheme. This involved placements at Ministry of Defence sites to analyse security levels and potential weaknesses of IT systems which store (or transmit) sensitive data. I wrote security evaluation documents which highlighted potential or existing vulnerabilities, based on a technical knowledge of the systems. This was a client-facing role; communication with the evaluation targets was necessary daily.
Programmer, Schlumberger GeoQuestProgramming in C++, I worked as part of a team on the front-end of ECLIPSE Office, a large software suite for oil field simulations, running on UNIX and NT platforms. This was my first experience of coding with a large volume of libraries and existing code, as well as working in a team environment.
